mynewhair celebrates 10th anniversary
A pioneering national charity founded by professional stylist Trevor Sorbie MBE is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The charity, mynewhair, provides much needed advice and support to anyone who has experienced medical hair loss and has a network of stylists and salons throughout the UK.
mynewhair’s national support network of independent salons and professionals provide a wig-styling service to those in need. Currently, there are approximately 900 hair professionals, including freelance and mobile hairdressers, and almost 800 salons across UK and Ireland in the mynewhair network. (45 in Scotland, 511 in England, 34 in Wales, 8 in Northern Ireland and 44 in the Republic of Ireland).
Trevor Sorbie is instrumental in the training of hair stylists and he joins other members of the charity every month at special training seminars for hair professionals at the L’Oreal academy in London. Seminars have also been held in Newcastle, Glasgow, Dundee and Belfast.
On completion of the training seminars, hair professionals become part of the charity’s salon network – Salons that Care – and start to provide a wig-cutting and advice service to anyone with medical hair loss. Importantly, each of these professionals pledge their commitment to the charities guiding principles and provides a caring and sensitive service for their clients.
mynewhair has produced a booklet of advice and information in conjunction with the Department of Health and the Institute of Trichologists. The Patient Information Resource booklet provides advice and support for patients if they lose their hair, advice on choosing a wig, having it styled to suit, as well as information with regards to aftercare/hair re-growth.
Trevor Sorbie, MBE, founder of mynewhair, is proud of his involvement with the charity and the important work it does. Commenting on the charity’s landmark milestone, he said: “In the 10 years that the charity has been going our team and myself have achieved goals beyond our expectations.
“The Department of Health has supported us, along with Gordon Brown when he was Prime Minister, who gave the charity a substantial grant for us to continue our work. Thanks to L'Oréal's continued support we hope to take this concept internationally. This is our vision.”
